Shining Ordinance Adopted (press release)

The Town of Liberty, Vernon County WI, recently adopted a no shining ordinance within its town boundaries. This means that no person may use a light for shining wild animals from a road or vehicle. This decision was not taken lightly by the Town Board as we understand that this is a Wisconsin tradition that many law-abiding citizens enjoy. However, in the recent years there have been numerous incidents of improper shining, namely the shining of livestock and homes of rural residents. Livestock have been spooked and as a result caused fence damage. Additionally, there have been several incidents of deer poaching in our Town which as one can imagine is unsafe for our residents.

No shining signs have been posted along the boundaries to the Town of Liberty. The Vernon County Sheriff will enforce this ordinance – there is a $500 fine.

Please direct any questions or concerns to the Liberty Town Board – Terry Theis (Chairperson), Nicole Rakobitsch (Supervisor, Adrian Amelse (Supervisor).
